Irene and Doreen began recording as The Chanters, a family group which sometimes included some of their brothers. Their first recordings were under the name Birds of a Feather, and later as The Chanter Sisters. Their only UK Singles Chart hit was "Sideshow" which entered the chart in July 1976 but failed to make the top 40, peaking at number 43.
The sisters had more success as backing singers in the years which followed, working with Elton John, Long John Baldry, Phil Manzanera, Roxy Music, John Miles, The Secret Policeman's Ball, Van Morrison, Pink Floyd, Roger Waters, Meatloaf, Joe Cocker and many other famous names.
