Venue Mothers (Carlton Ballroom)
High Street, Erdington.
Mothers opened on 9 August 1968 and closed on 3 January 1971.
Mothers in Erdington began as The Carlton Ballroom and hosted national pop acts as well as local stars, and The Moody Blues were known to use it as a rehearsal space. As the music scene changed in the late 1960s the club started to book many of the now legendary rock bands of the time so the line-up for the club was incredibly strong for a club based in the suburbs.
Artistes including Black Sabbath, The Moody Blues, The Faces, Deep Purple, Jethro Tull, Fleetwood Mac, Fairport Convention, The Who, Free, Traffic, Muddy Waters, Elton John, King Crimson, Yes and Pink Floyd all played at Mothers. Well-known radio DJ John Peel also championed the club and appeared there on a number of occasions.
