John 'Spud' Taylor's diary featuring bands/artists playing at Mothers in Erdington, Birmingham, in 1970.
Mothers (formerly the Carlton Ballroom) opened above an old furniture store in Erdington High Street in 1968. The club, run by John Singer, John 'Spud' Taylor and promoter Phil Myatt, closed its doors in January 1971.
It saw many famous names of the time perform there like Black Sabbath, The Moody Blues, The Faces, Deep Purple, Jethro Tull, Fleetwood Mac, Fairport Convention, The Who, Free, Traffic (who made their debut at the club), Muddy Waters, Elton John, King Crimson, Yes, and Pink Floyd who recorded part of their live album Ummagumma there. Well known DJ John Peel also championed the club, as well as appearing there.
Mothers was voted the number one rock venue in the world by America's Billboard magazine in 1969 and 1970.
